As the New Year hits stride, BC family physicians are endeavouring on a new way to deliver care for you. The amazing thing is, unlike many system changes, you will not feel the direct effects if you are not looking for it. Let me explain.
Over the past 2 years, regional health care leadership and local family physicians have been planning to improve accessible family medicine care for British Columbians. This means more funding channeled to improve your experience at the doctor's office. With potential more resources devoted to professionals, working with family doctors to support your family medicine experience.
These are people like nurses and social workers who can support your needs when you see the doctor. For new immigrants, this might mean more supports to help you navigate a complicated
health system, social agencies dedicated to your housing, employment, child care issues. Nurses will be able to better support doctors with many issues such as women's health and baby visits.
All this to smooth out your experience at the doctors office. With potentially more services, more flexible hours of operation, new immigrants' health needs should feel better supported. It's a good change, like many positive changes, comfortably welcoming.
